Pilates Explained

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a physical fitness system that was created in the early 20th century by a man named Joseph Pilates. Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility.   Pilates uses fewer, more precise movements in order to achieve the Pilates principles: correct alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, and flow.

The primary reason most people begin Pilates is for the health benefits. Despite being a relatively low-impact method of exercise, Pilates is a powerful tool for improving health for anyone at any level of fitness or experience.

Pilates has been proven to:

  1. Increase overall strength.
Pilates strengthens the muscles from the inside out, increasing core strength and bone strength.

  2. Improves posture, flexibility and balance.
By focusing on proper body alignment and posture, you will eventually hold yourself differently by standing taller, sitting straighter, and moving with better coordination and balance.

  3. Improve sports performance and reduce the risk of injury.
During your pilates sessions we will constantly assess lifestyle and repetitive movements and balance the muscular system to bring harmony to your body.

  4. Inner strength.
You will become better in tune with your individual needs. This will help you to be able to train efficiently and effectively.

  5. Reduce stress, and improve mental clarity.
The mind-body connection that you will achieve during Pilates will help relieve external stresses and pass time.

  6. Increased energy.
Pilates isn’t an exhausting workout that leaves you feeling worn out. Instead, you’ll end your workout feeling an increase in energy with a clear, focused mind.

  7. Eliminates toxins.
With regular Pilates workouts, you may begin to see improvements with your digestion system. This includes an increased metabolic rate as well as a healthier immune system.

  8. Increase cognitive function, motivation and focus.
Pilates utilizes slow and mindful movement creating an awareness within your body.

  9. Minimize pain.
By strengthening the deep postural & stabilizing muscles you will gain more support and minimize pain.

Fun Facts

Pilates was formed during World War I with the intention of helping injured soldiers regain their health by strengthening, stretching, and stabilizing certain muscles.

Joseph Pilates himself often used his methods to help rehabilitate patients during his time as an orderly in a hospital on the Isle of Man. To this day Pilates principles and methods are still used in rehabilitation centers because of their proven ability to rebuild strength.

When Joseph Pilates founded his system of exercise he understood that physical health and wellness is integral to all areas of life.

Change happens though movement and movement heals.
